Plein Air Easton! 15 Years Anniversary!

Plein Air Easton is the largest and most prestigious juried plein air painting competition in the United States.  Celebrating its 15th year in 2019, the competition is held in Easton, Maryland each July.  Plein air painters produce art from life (as opposed to in the studio). Artists from all over the United States and beyond apply to this competition beginning December 1st of the previous year.  There will be 58 competing artists painting throughout Talbot County, Maryland the week of July 14th.  Many of the world's most accomplished artists have Easton at the top of their wish list of competitions and we will continue to set the bar for excellence in the coming year.

Quick Facts:

  • Art sales for last year's event topped $400,000 with 294 paintings sold in 2.5 days.

  • Approximately 6,000-8,000 people participate in the festival throughout the week

  • In 2018 the Collectors' Preview Party alone sold a painting every 45 seconds during a 90 minute period.

  • Plein Air Easton’s Quick Draw is open to any artist with $10 and ambition.  Nearly 200 artists paint for 2 hours in downtown Easton and the event culminates in an outdoor exhibit and sale along South Harrison Street.

  • Galleries and arts organizations program scores of demos, workshops, exhibits and lectures as part of the event. This year an exceptional line up of reknowned artists, PAE alumni and esteemed professionals in the art world will be sharing their talents and knowledge during the week of July 14-21.

  • 2019 Collectors' Preview Party

This evening bustles with excitement and sales are brisk as a painting is sold every 45 seconds over 90 minutes.

  • 2019 Collectors Preview Party

The $250.00 price of each Collectors Preview Party ticket applies in full to purchase of paintings in the Academy Art Museum and the Armory building all weekend. The value of tickets are transferable and can be combined.  Any remainder cannot be exchanged for cash.

Artistic excellence and the production of investment quality art continues to be the trademark of this 10-day festival. As the event moves into its second decade, organizers are honing what makes the Forgotten Coast event exceptional. “With plein air events popping up all over the country, we realize the importance of focusing on quality and relevance. We have developed a three year program, transcending typical event content to focus on the reason why plein air painting is important, as well as how the process and the paintings contribute to a region’s resilience,” states Event Chair Joe Taylor.

May of 2017 will focus on the local culture with an emphasis on the people, the places and stories behind the plein air paintings. The region’s rich culture and heritage,. And in 2018, we will celebrate the built environment. This human-made space in which people live, work, and recreate will showcase architecture, streetscapes, working waterfronts and historic sites. While each year will have a programmatic focus for the purpose of examination in the series of lectures, presentations and discussions, the collectors can be assured that the paintings will be a superb mix of subject matter and styles.
